In the home – Flat packed & self assembly
August 1st, 2008 by Nicola Jones (View Author Profile)
Interior products usually come pre assembled with surplus packaging and waste. Let your thoughts step away from the stigma of a typical flat packed MDF kitchen – too easy. Innovative product designers are now creating furniture and products formed with ingenious folds – think of origami. Products from lamp shades, chairs to bins are being designed in complete pieces that can be folded flat. So 3D becomes 2D!Â
What are the eco advantages? There are a few parts to consider:Â
Less demand for mass production
- Less machinery/energy use as no holes to drill
- Less packaging
- Less waste if complete pieces
Fuel economy
- Less fuel used during transportation & shipping as more items can be fitted into one space
Storage economy
- Less storage space – meaning less energy resources to house the items e.g. smaller store rooms, less building materials etc.
Energy use
- Consumer doesn′t need energy intensive tools to build
- Consumer will probably use hand tools rather than electric or fuel operated
Designed for reuse
- When you move, easy to transport
- Easy to fold back down into a 2 dimensional form or easy to disassemble
- No need to throw away
- No need to leave it behind with the new occupant
- Saves money
- Saves packaging
