Why buy local?
Most materials and products are imported into Ireland from overseas – mainly the UK. Transport emissions cause air pollution contributing to climate change & increasing health risks. Transportation from the manufacturer, to the distributor, to the retailer and then to your home whether by ship, train, plane or lorry uses large amounts of energy – in particular fossil based fuel which are infinite resources. Here are the reasons to buy local:Â
Support your local economy – Relying on imported goods doesn′t sustain your local economy and may drive out small businesses. Chain shops are less personal, homogenised and the shopping experience is lifeless = no value or rapport.  Spending your money with local retailers helps keep the local economy alive. Â
Support your local community – Money spent with local businesses, producers & retailers keeps local trade alive, sustained and with a healthy future. This helps people settle in one community through value, rapport and community spirit.Â
Support local businesses – Buying locally means that employment levels will stay constant, and may even create more opportunities for local residents to work in the community.  This encourages local manufacture and retail – creating less demand for superstores and mass produced goods. Â
Support your local identity – Buying local helps the local building language. This means the style of construction, homes that fit into the landscape using local materials – giving your community a sense of identity. Â
