Plastic is not so fantastic
For a taster of what could have been our future, view this clip from www.retro-matic.com titled ′House of the Future – Mid-Century Modern Style and Design’ featuring a Monsanto sponsored exhibit at Disneyland from 1957 to 1967. This is an indoor air quality and volatile organic compound (VOCs) nightmare. Could you imagine the toxins within the air, as you breath these in whilst you sleep, live and work? Since the invention of plastic the Westernised world has seen an increase in respiratory and skin conditions – most are associated with VOCs. We also don′t know the long term affects of exposure to these toxic vapours. With more sinister medical associations.
Take a minute to compare your home to the clip – what′s different? How much plastic is in your home? Don′t only look for the obvious like plastic chairs or window frames, consider resins, adhesives, paints, carpet, laminate flooring, surface finishes etc. When you look at each product or material, most will contain some type of plastic or synthetic substance. Maybe your home isn′t as different as the ′House of the Future′ as you had thought. Environmental design means making informed decisions about how you fit out and furnish your living space. Consider your health, wellbeing and the natural environment with every choice you make.
