I can’t afford to green my home
With the current climate and tightening purse strings, how often do you hear ′I can′t afford green, not right now, I′ll just keep going as I am. Shopping for eco products is just too expensive′.Whilst some things are going to be costly in the short term e.g. solar panels and renewable energy heating systems, what you fill your interior with is not just about buying the latest eco product.
Consider a different perspective and approach greening your interior by making informed decisions. Define your ethics and think about all of the different ′eco′ principles e.g. recycled content, use of chemicals, minimise waste, salvage/reclaim, 100% natural, local manufacturers, VOCs, design for dissemble, recyclable after use, durability & lifespan, energy used during manufacture, location of raw materials, environmental initiatives etc. Sometimes buying the latest eco label is not the best step environmentally at all. Making use of what you already have in the home is one of the most effective ways of reducing, reusing, recycling and reviewing.
There are plenty of responsible and creative ways to go green when you remodel your home without breaking your budget; make use of the free recycling networks, look for second hand bargains, renovate, refurbish and reupholster as much as you can, hold a garage sale or even have an interior swapping party. You don′t have to be a member of the eco elite to change old habits, invent new ones and create a more sustainable lifestyle.
