Save money and CO2 by being frugal with your fuel!!

Don′t worry, I′m not going to tell you to get yourself a little electric run around, or even a hip hybrid – all you need to do to save on your fuel consumption is to change your driving habits! With the price of petrol and diesel spiralling out of control, and the obvious green benefits to boot, giving the following tips a go is a complete no brainer!!!

1. Shade the car. With the recent hot weather and the optimistic promise of some more to come, remember to park your motor under the shade whenever you can. Or park your car in the garage when you get home. This way your car interior will stay cooler and your fuel will not evaporate as quickly in the heat. (Don′t forget the added advantage of parking indoor is avoiding bird s*@# !!).

2. Don′t keep your foot resting on the break. Breaks are meant for stopping. The slightest pressure on the break places a “mechanical drag” on components and wears them down ahead of time. This “dragging” also requires additional fuel usage, eats up your brake pads and rotors.

3. Avoid sudden stop start scenarios. In other words don′t drive like a jack rabbit!! Sudden stops and starts will consume huge amounts of fuel because the engine has to work much harder to get the car up to speed.

4. Don′t get stuck on the road during rush hour. I know those who fight through the M50 daily are shouting at their screens as they read this, so I accept it is not always, if ever possible in real life. But, if you can find out what times rush hour begins and ends and leave about 15 minutes early to get to where ever it is you need to go. You will save time, patience and fuel.

5. Tighten the fuel cap. Fuel will evaporate from the tank if it has an escape so make sure you use a bit of muscle when you replace your fuel cap.

6. Don′t keep your car running in a queue for more than 30 seconds. Cars today are made so that they start quickly. Turning it off and then turning it back on when ready to go is more fuel efficient than letting your vehicle idle.

7. Don′t drive. For some trips, our cars are undoubtedly the best option. But did you know that over half of our daily car trips in urban areas are under 2km, a distance that’s easily walked or cycled. Cutting down on car use can be very rewarding on the pocket, as well being good for your health and the environment. Consider walking, cycling, public transport, and even reducing the need to travel altogether. And if you really can’t do without a car, try car sharing, car clubs, greener fuels and smarter driving tips.

Also, ask you boss if you can you work from home or be more flexible with your working hours? You′ll be surprised how open to home working some companies have become!!

Don′t become a hermit though. You want to go out in the real world every now and then, but consider all the things you need to do and then think about the ones you can do from home at least every once in a while.
