Tony Kearney was born in New Zealand where he grew up and studied at University. Having qualified as a lawyer he then practised law in London for nearly 25 years. In 2006 he moved to Ireland where he now lives and works as an eclectic mix of writer, consultant, trainer, facilitator, farmer and mediator in seeking to be part of the process of change. Tony's most recent book Who Owns The Future? pulls no punches about the peril of our current situation, but essentially offers an optimistic and realistic view of the future based on the premise that the human race can successfully change and adapt its behaviour in order to survive and flourish. The question is however, will it make those changes? And, will you?

Where is the Rest of the Universe?

December 21st, 2009 by Tony Kearney  (View Author Profile)

As you may or may not know 96% of the Universe is “missing”.  Please kindly check your cupboards to see if you are unwittingly hiding some of it.  Thank you!

OK so scientists can’t explain why the Universe is expanding at an accelerating rate rather than slowing down as you would expect, so they have come up with the idea of dark matter and dark energy to explain it.
There’s no proof of either, but it’s a nice idea and helps justify spending billions on  Hadron Colliders that might blow us all up, but hey it’s all in the name of science isn’t it so it has to be worth it right?

And scientists have recently detected signs of what they believe might be evidence of what dark matter might actually made up of.
They call this stuff – Weakly Interacting Massive Particles or WIMPS for short.  It’s true, check it out if you don’t believe me!

And they have recently detected some anomalies from deep space that might be signs of these WIMPS existing they say.

However why they needed to spend all that time, effort and money looking for WIMPS is a bit baffling really when all they had to do was fly to Copenhagen for the COP15 Conference and find a whole plethora of them there!

In case you are wondering what these weakly interacting massive particles might themselves be made of then the egos of all these so called world leaders could be close.  And the bigger the egos the less time they spent there.

The only person who seemed to have any decent grip on the need and the urgency of the situation was the Danish Environment Minister who was hosting the event and she was fairly quickly replaced by, yes you guessed it, a man with a rather large ego because other men who also had rather large egos didn’t like the way she was handling the conference!

So looks like WIMPS make up 96% of the known Universe!

So what might the other 4% be made of?
How about – S.T.U.F.F.?  – Strong, Tiny, United, Free-Radical, Forces
They may all be tiny but together they build a future where everyone is included and  everyone is part of the solution.
And although it might only make up 4% of the Universe that’s still quite a lot of STUFF to be getting on with!

WIMPS might not give a STUFF about the rest of the world, but who knows before you know it,
“S.T.U.F.F. the Future” could be the new logo for the next decade?

Copenhagen – Success or Failure?

December 20th, 2009 by Tony Kearney  (View Author Profile)

Having been in Copenhagen for some of the COP15 process over the last two weeks and watching like everyone else the – will they, won’t they – charade played out by the world’s leaders one is forced to ask the question – did the Conference end in abject failure or was it in fact a success?

It is hard to see the Conference as being any kind of success, but then that depends on how we define success and what eyes we use to look at the gathering with.

Yes, of course we all hoped that the world’s politicians would all see the greater reality and notice that not only was there an elephant in the room, but there was a stampeding herd of them forcing us all to realise that we are in fact standing on the edge of a cliff with nowhere to go as the herd approaches.

However…..

Success is defined as being able to see the reality of one’s situation clearer than one saw it before.  For if one sees the truth more clearly then one is better equipped to take meaningful and positive action in order to improve things for the better.

So ……

What we now know is that if we wait for the world’s politicians to take meaningful, equitable, sustainable and bigger picture action in order to secure a better future, the elephants will be upon us long before the politicians will be.

This is in fact a good thing.
Whilst we wait for “others” to act first we all miss our own window of opportunity to be the change we want to see happen in the world.
For in truth what can a few hundred politicians really do in the real world that 6,500,000,000 can’t do by all making one small change each day towards seeing the world becoming a fairer and safer place for all?

The Genie is in fact out of the bottle and to the surprise of some if not many, the name of the Genie on the bottle is not in fact that of Barrack Obama.

However, if you look closely again at the name on the bottle it might just be yours!

The charade of Copenhagen is over and the truth has been revealed.
The power moves back to the people and there is something so right about that fact.
Remember how the Governments of the world were shamed by their people’s overwhelming response to the needs of the Asian Tsunami?

We therefore have a precedent for what is needed and for what works.

You might not be the President but you can for sure be the Precedent! :)

Are We Missing the Point Here?

December 2nd, 2009 by Tony Kearney  (View Author Profile)

OK so next week COP15 kicks off in Copenhagen and although Barack Obama is now attending the signs are that no binding agreements are going to be reached about lowering emissions. I hope I am wrong but the signs aren’t looking great at the moment. So will it be another bout of rhetoric, protectionism, silo mentalities, reality denials and posturing?

Well maybe, because I am going for some of it so look out for me there! :)
See: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dc2w3h9b_9g7×6qq7f&btr=EmailImport

And with some recent news about alleged suppression of evidence that may contradict the climate change argument that it is human caused, will there be a refuelling (pardon the pun) of the denial versus consensus argument about the causes and realities of climate change?

Well in one sense does that really matter, or more importantly is it actually the place to start?

For nobody seems to be thinking about exploring the nature of our relationship with the Planet and the moral, philosophical and possible spiritual considerations that are just as, if not more important, than winning the argument over the causes or not of climate change.

For even if human activity isn’t causing climate change to any significant degree, is it moral for us to continue to behave in such an irresponsible, arrogant, assumptive and dangerous way by treating the Earth, our host as a commodity?

Even if compelling and irrefutable evidence is produced to show conclusively that human activity isn’t causing climate change does that somehow excuse the continuing rape, pillage and plunder of the Earth’s resources and the erosion not only of the soils of the Earth but those of the future?

That’s a bit like saying that slavery is OK because it doesn’t cause climate change.

We need to change not what we DO as a first principle but what and how we think.

Because if we are going to talk quotas at COP15 there is only one statistic to remember and that is that there is only one Planet that we all share and there is no plan B.

We need to change our perception about our relationship with the Planet before we try and change our actions.
For we don’t live ON the Planet, we live IN it for the Earth’s atmosphere is an essential part of its living existence without which we are all a goner.

So will our relationship with the Earth change from being parasitic to symbiotic?

Our futures are inextricably linked.

Quotas won’t win the argument.
But reverence, humility, awe and wonder might.

So maybe pause for a moment and give thanks for your next breath before you speak at the Conference everyone, and realise there is something sacred we all share where both the future and the present are concerned.

UK Plays Ostrich

November 21st, 2009 by Tony Kearney  (View Author Profile)

In the last few weeks the UK Government has announced that it has given the green light for 10 more nuclear stations to be built to help cover energy supply over the next 30 to 50 years and help lower its CO2 emissions.  Or so they say.

Well done team, you have once again shown impeccable leadership where denial of the realities is concerned. (more…)

How Much Does Water Cost?

November 11th, 2009 by Tony Kearney  (View Author Profile)

One of the things that gives a false impression about the true costs of things is that often the price of natural resources is not included in the bottom line.  As an example, the use of water in producing a beef burger.  (more…)

You Cannot be Serious FSA!!

August 12th, 2009 by Tony Kearney  (View Author Profile)

So the British Foods Standards Agency (FSA) has deigned down upon us all their view that organic food has no health benefits over “ordinary” food.  Funny how food that is produced by using chemicals and pesticides is now regarded as being “ordinary” food don’t you think?
It’s not natural, but thankfully and to much relief all round, the FSA has decreed it to be “ordinary”.  Phew!

It is even more funny (peculiar, not ha ha) that when you think about it that we are therefore the only species on the Planet who are eating “ordinary” food by choice because we are the only species on the Planet who deliberately “flavour” our food with such chemicals and pesticides.  (Of course many of these species now do partake of our chemical cocktail soup because they have no choice, but that’s another matter.)  By the way can we extend their analogy to things like “ordinary” weapons of mass destruction and organic ones?  Are “ordinary” WMDs better?

Do all those poor critters and plants know what they were missing before we came along?
Well maybe they do because other “scientific” reports indicate that about 67 million birds die each year in the USA as a direct result of the use of pesticides.  But of course if the FSA say there are no health benefits in eating organic food then who am I to argue?

Or what about the fact that the average Irish person eats about 7kg worth of preservatives and additives each year, many of which are carcinogenic and certainly aren’t healthy?  But no, the FSA says there are no health benefits in eating organic.

Or what about the fact that organic food has been shown to contain much higher levels of flavonoids, proteins and zinc for example than “ordinary” food.  These all been proven to have positive health benefits, but these scientific reports “weren’t relevant” to the FSA report. Of course not, you’d have to be an idiot to think they would be wouldn’t you?

Saying that organic food is no healthier than “ordinary” food is also a bit like the Chinese saying opening a new coal mine every week is going to boost their economy.  In fact the economic costs of doing so will far outweigh any potential benefits due to environmental degradation, pollution and massive health costs as a result.

Is the use of pesticides and chemicals any different in the long run?

Any scientific report to have credibility needs context, meaningful content and most importantly of all objectivity.

The FSA report lacks all three and therefore falls on its own sword of being – ordinary!
Do not digest it would be my advice – it could damage your health!

Beyond Teflon!

August 6th, 2009 by Tony Kearney  (View Author Profile)

Following on from my last blog about NASA crashing a probe into the Moon, since the recent return of the Space Shuttle one of the greatest space secrets of all time can now be revealed.  It could be as big as the mystery of the Holy Grail, the riddle of the Sphinx and what really happened to Sheargar combined!

Now over time NASA has sought to justify the horrendous expenditure they have incurred by claiming that numerous amazing inventions have come out of the space programme as side effect benefits.

This is known as the Teflon effect from the assertion that it wasn’t for NASA we may never have discovered Teflon and where would we be today without the Teflon Fry pan?  I mean, would your life fall apart?  Mine would!

They claim this benefit in relation to all sorts of incredible inventions that they say would never have been made if we hadn’t ventured into space.  I mean the pen that can write with the nib above the ink for example.  Awesome!!  It changed my life, how about yours?
That’s got to be worth a few hundred million isn’t it?

All this of course is hubris of the highest order because if in fact any of these great discoveries truly are to the benefit of mankind then we could have discovered them simply by focusing on the need down here and seeing what would help alleviate suffering, food shortages, disease or whatever.

You don’t need to go to space to see the need you just need to open your eyes or pull your head out of your backside!

Which neatly brings us to the latest NASA uber invention.

And it is ……. underpants you don’t have to change for a month and maybe more!!
Apparently one of the astronauts was trying these out for a month without telling his crew mates (what a cool guy huh?) during the latest expedition.

I wonder if these undies are also made of Teflon?
They might not need changing for a month or more but wouldn’t they chafe a bit?
Maybe with a bit more tweaking and refinement we can come up with a dual space saving invention of undies that you can also fry your food on in Space?

Remember, you heard it here first folks!  I could be rich next time I write!

Space – The final Frontier?

July 1st, 2009 by Tony Kearney  (View Author Profile)

Apparently NASA in its infinite wisdom is about to deliberately crash land a rocket into the Moon to try and create a crater so they can find out more about the Moon.

What a great way to spend countless millions of dollars!
Never mind the other billions upon billions that have also been spent on countless other programmes over the years.

However don’t get me wrong, I do believe that we need to continue with a space exploration programme into the future, but perhaps one that is closer to home.

It is essential that we create spaces in our communities at every level from physical to spiritual so that we can discover different parts of ourselves that can give access and release to a different kind of future.

Part of this space programme (not the stupid one run by NASA!) is to create awareness of what is really important and what is going on in our communities to facilitate the shifts in consciousness that are needed to change our reality.

Our problem is that we have been living in the wrong reality for quite some time and this has led us to making wrong decisions and wrong actions.
And before you know it someone somewhere is authorising programmes to crash into the Moon!

We have an almost unlimited amount of space in our communities for well over 99% of each and every person is made up of space. We also have lots of space externally if we shift our values, goals and importances and reallocate some of these spaces to community groups and volunteers for them to create allotments, gardens and places of beauty and sustainability.

The only thing we need to do to allow this to happen is to create some space in our thinking.

To think it is to create it.

The place to do that is here on Earth for it is highly doubtful that NASA will find any good ideas inside the crater it creates on the Moon.

Climate change? Bring it on!

May 7th, 2009 by Tony Kearney  (View Author Profile)

Anywhere you go today all you hear is more doom and gloom about climate change and how do we prevent climate change from happening.
Well, this article suggests that you stop fighting it and learn how to embrace climate change so that what needs to happen can happen!

For climate change is exactly what is needed, if we are to embrace a sustainable future.

How so you might say?

Well, the external forces of climate change that human beings are causing are the direct result of the wrong kind of internal climate system that we have been operating on since the rise of civilisation and in particular the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century.  For the human climate then changed from being one of part of nature to one of trying to conquer nature, mostly with the idea of making a profit at whatever cost.

This is somewhat ironic for all profit costs someone or something somewhere.
For profit making isn’t sustainable in the long run, whereas natural law is.

The climate that is needed is not an external one of changing what we do as a first principle, but a climate change of remembering what we actually are.
We are human beings not human doings and it is all our doing, doing, doing that has got us into all this trouble in the first place.  And this has caused a cloud of depression to appear overhead.

However all is not lost.

For behind those clouds lies the Sun and as the giver of life it can teach us things about climate change and what we might need to do to rescue the future from the errors of the past.

And that is to ask ourselves, what does it mean to give rather than take, to work with nature and not fight it, and most important of all why would we want to change our internal climate in the first place?

Is green food more expensive?

May 7th, 2009 by Tony Kearney  (View Author Profile)

Classic reasoning suggests that organic food is more expensive to produce and buy than so called main stream food.  But is it?
If you look at the strict production costs then yes, on average, organic food costs about 10 -15% more to produce.

But, that is not the whole story because you have to consider the side effects as well.

For did you know that the average Irish person consumes 7 kg of preservatives and additives each year?  In fact it takes human beings longer to decompose when they die because of all the preservatives and additives in their bodies!

Many of these chemicals have been shown to cause illnesses and diseases because the body has great difficulty in breaking them down.  As they are ‘foreign’ invaders the body often attacks them and this can cause illnesses such as Cancer.  These illnesses then have Health Service costs that far outweigh the alleged savings produced by using chemicals to produce the food.

These additives and preservatives are not healthy either in a person or in the land where they inevitably end up.  For when you die you yourself could become a source of environmental pollution as all the preservatives and additives in your body slowly seep into the land.  Quite a thought isn’t it?

So don’t become a source of environmental pollution and at the same time save the country money!  Spend a bit more money at the till now and buy green and then it won’t cost you so much later on when your health suffers!  And when you die you can rest easy knowing that you didn’t end up as a source of toxic waste and pollution.
