Eco themed ‘Avatar’ epic – trailer released

November 4th, 2009 by GreenMe  (View Author Profile)

avator1That early taste of director James Cameron’s new scifi epic Avatar has just become a full on meal.

A new full trailer has just been released expanding on the story and pulling back the curtain on the gorgeous alien world of Pandora.  Avatar deals with some very Earth-like environmental conflicts — particularly the battle over rare resources and the displacement of indigenous settlements to get at them. In an interview, Cameron said that one of the major themes he wanted to base his story on was how “advanced civilizations supplant indigenous cultures, in either actively genocidal or more unpremeditated ways.”

Tinker Bell is UN’s Green Ambassador

November 4th, 2009 by GreenMe  (View Author Profile)

tinker_bell2This one’s for those of you keeping track of the international impact of animated ambassadors…  At the world premiere of Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure it was announced by the UN that Tinker Bell would be the organization’s new Honorary Ambassador of Green.  “Honorary” perhaps because her ability to carry out her diplomatic duties is hindered somewhat by not being, um, real.

This is one of the UN’s steps, under the Secretary-General’s Creative Community Outreach Initiative, to promote environmental awareness in the lead-up to the upcoming Copenhagen conference on climate change. Huzzah!

According to Disney, “Since its earliest days, The Walt Disney Company has sought to inspire a love of nature and spirit of conservation through its storytelling, and the environment is an underlying theme of the Tinker Bell movies, told through the magical world of Fairies, Pixie Hollow, where nature is nurtured. Tinker Bell is a natural ambassador of Green, living consistently in harmony with the environment, her appointment, as Honorary Ambassador of Green, is a great opportunity for this beloved character to play a key role in inspiring kids.”

Mae Whitman and Raven-Symone both gave their voice talents to the film and were at the premiere to celebrate Tink’s new role.

In the interest of full disclosure, I was actually on-hand at the UN in 1997 when Winnie-the-Pooh was named the UN Ambassador of Friendship. I kinda wish I was making that up. I’m not.

Pamela Anderson launches eco friendly clothing range

September 29th, 2009 by GreenMe  (View Author Profile)

richie-rich-pamela-anderson-clothing-line-500x694Pamela Anderson’s new eco-friendly clothing collection, A*Muse was launched last week – and spectators were treated to a bit more of the model/actress than they expected.

The former Baywatch beauty and animal rights activist has teamed up with Heatherette fashionisto Richie Rich to create a collection of environmentally-friendly fashion threads.

While modeling the new range on the catwalk, the front and back of her outfit fell away showing off a bit of almost everything; red thong included.

Could that flash have been intentional to save what at least one fashion critic called “a cross between Supré and Borat”?

U2 under fire for their carbon footprint

August 21st, 2009 by GreenMe  (View Author Profile)

edgeU2 guitarist The Edge has defended the size and cost of their 360 world tour, as the band rocked Wembley Stadium on the first night of their UK leg.

Last month, protests delayed the removal of the custom-built set from Ireland, and it also came under fire from Talking Heads singer David Byrne.

The three steel structures cost between £15m and £20m each, offering a largely unobstructed view of the rock quartet.

The “claw” stage enabled an estimated 88,000 fans to watch U2.

The huge green and orange structure in the centre of the stadium projected smoke and lights as the crowd looked on.

Despite it being the most ambitious stage set of any band’s world tour, topping the likes of Madonna and The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads frontman David Byrne was not impressed.

He slammed the band on his blog and said their world tour costs were “excessive”, considering their stance on world hunger.

I think it’s probably unfair to single out rock ‘n’ roll. There’s many other things that are in the same category
U2 guitarist, The Edge

When asked whether the Irish rock veterans were stung by the criticism they received, The Edge told BBC 6 Music’s Julie Cullen: “I think anybody that’s touring is going to have a carbon footprint.

“I think it’s probably unfair to single out rock ‘n’ roll. There’s many other things that are in the same category but as it happens we have a programme to offset whatever carbon footprint we have.”

Neil Young goes green

April 18th, 2009 by GreenMe  (View Author Profile)

The main motivation behind Neil Young’s new album Fork In The Road is to get people thinking about sustainable transportation. Many of the songs deal with our dependence on oil and the lack of environmentally-friendly alternatives out there unlike the LincVolt electric car Young had converted recently, which you can see Young cruising in below.

Michael Jackson sparks controversy with PETA

April 6th, 2009 by GreenMe  (View Author Profile)

micheal-jacksonPETA, who earlier this year went after Britney Spears’ plans to include live “circus” animals in her upcoming tour (she eventually backed down) is now angered that Michael Jackson is considering doing the same thing. Jackson has already sold out a 10-concert residency at London’s 02 Arena amids rumours he is to feature a variety of exotic creatures onstage during his comeback concerts.

British newspaper the Daily Mirror reports Jackson is planning a nature theme for the concerts – with live creatures featuring heavily in the shows.

A source tells the publication, “He hopes to make it the most spectacular gig ever. For the jungle section, he wants to ride out on an African elephant with panthers led on gold chains. Parrots and other birds will fly behind him. If it goes to plan it will look incredible.”

But the idea has infuriated campaigners at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who are urging the singer to ditch the plans.

PETA states, “These exotic animals belong in Africa, not the O2 Arena among screaming fans, bright lights and stage explosions. These wild animals are deprived of everything that is natural and important to them when they are forced to perform under stressful conditions. Michael needs to learn to leave exotic animals alone.”

Jackson has previously come under fire from PETA for the hoarde of animals he kept in his private zoo at his Neverland ranch in California.

Brad meets Obama to discuss green rebuilding in New Orleans

March 12th, 2009 by GreenMe  (View Author Profile)

Brad-Pitt Brad Pitt paid a visit to the White House last week for a meeting with President Barack Obama to discuss his charity and green rebuilding efforts in New Orleans through the organisation Make It Right NOLA.

Apparently, Pitt’s meeting with Obama was kept secret — an interesting choice, since the President’s meeting with George Clooney last week was made public well in advance. Once word got out, however, the White House went Pitt crazy.

Pitt’s presence drained entire congressional offices not surprisingly few female workers could be found at their desks during Brad’s presence at the congress.
Hopefully, Pitt was able to get a few people to pay attention to his rebuilding efforts in New Orleans. Make It Right officially opened several of its 150 green planned, sustainable homes last December. To date the project has been a great success.
